Reunification Services for Families

What is Reunification Services:

Reunification Services, often referred to as Reunification Therapy, are not considered therapy in the traditional healthcare sense. Instead, these services are court-referred and specifically designed to assist estranged families, typically parents and children, in reconnecting and working toward reconciliation after a period of separation or alienation. The primary goal of Reunification Services is to create a structured and supportive environment where family members can communicate and address the conflicts or issues that led to their estrangement. While the process may involve working with family members individually and as a group, the focus is not on treating psychological or emotional conditions but rather on facilitating the reunification process as directed by the court. Though challenging, these services can be instrumental in helping families rebuild their relationships.

What Reunification Services Can Help With

Reunification Services can assist with various issues, such as:

  • Establishing co-parenting boundaries - Co-parenting after a divorce or separation can be challenging, but reunification therapy can help parents communicate effectively to establish boundaries and routines that benefit their children.
  • Addressing estrangement - Estrangement, which occurs when family members become distant, may arise when a child harbors resentment or anger toward a parent during a divorce. Reunification Services aim to address the child's feelings and heal the relationship between parent and child.
  • Dealing with alienation - Alienation, on the other hand, happens when a child aligns with one parent over the other due to a false belief that the alienated parent is harmful or dangerous. In such cases, Reunification Services seeks to help the child develop a more realistic view of the parent's character and behaviors, which leads to a healthier relationship.
  • Implementing safety planning - Finally, if a child was removed from the home due to unsafe behavior from either the parent or child, Reunification Services can assist in establishing and implementing appropriate safety precautions to prevent future problems.
